The Food in Nebraska

Farms and ranches make up more than 92% of the land in Nebraska. And when you think about this state, its rich agriculture is likely no surprise. Nebraska does not have a state food. But many would argue that the unofficial state food of Nebraska is the Runza sandwich. It is made of soft, fluffy bread and is stuffed with a mixture of seasoned beef, cabbage, and onions. Why not pairing it with the wine that we use for street food, our "The Wine for Pizza": a Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, from Southern Italy, with a smooth texture and powerful fruitiness on the aftertaste. This wine will definitely match with the seasoned beef of the Runcha sandwich, while keeping under control the acidity of both the cabbage and onions thanks to its smoothness.

Rocky Mountains Oysters

Thinking about the traditional Nebraska food recipes, how not thinking about Rocky Mountain Oysters, the testicles of a bull deep-fried or heavily smoked. This recipe can be easily found in all Mid-West Countries, together with Southern Canada.

Our "The Wine for Steak", a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, represents the ideal pairing for the Rocky Mountain Oysters, thanks to its ability to balance the smooth and slippery texture of the food. In fact, the high tannins and lively acidity clean the mouth from the strong aroma of the bull testicles. Moreover, the powerful fruitiness brought by the Syrah well balances the aftertaste, making the mouth ready for another bite.

Corn

One of the most important Nebraska ingredient is corn, typically used in tasteful salads during the hot summer. PairME has thought of that, bringing to you "The Wine for Summer Salads": a rosé wine made from Syrah and Grenache grapes grown in Southern France. A delicate, yet flavourful wine that will combine with the aromas of your Salas, helping you to relax and refresh a little bit. It displays delicate aromas of strawberries, raspberries and grapefruit combined with a delicate note of flint.

Bison Meat

Bison Meat is becoming one of the most premium type of meat, often used in gourmet recipes. Fortunately, bison are not haunted in the wild anymore, but they are kept as the cows in the huge farms of Nebraska. Here, the animal are free to run and eat the grass that grow all over the place, producing a meat that has the typical firm texture and an earthy aftertaste. Bison meat is often served as a steak or an hamburger, surrounded by a lot of roasted potatoes and tomato salad.

“The Wine for Steak” is obviously the best match for bison meat, thanks to its fruitiness brought by the Syrah that balances the earthy character of the meat, while helping to take under control the firm texture of Bison meat. Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend gives to the wine a powerful sip, able to sustain the strength of the meat, grilled or braised.

Let’s start with “The Wine for Summer Salads”, a wine that can be easily paired with a lot of veggie products, just like the corn mentioned above. This wine is a delicate rosé wine produced from grapes grown in Southern France, a warm climate that allows the grapes to display elegant notes of strawberries, pomegranate and a little minerality: that means that this is the ideal wine for a vegetarian or vegan diet, thanks to its ability to not overwhelm recipes based on vegetables and fruits. This wine could also be paired with chicken salads and eggs, because of its lively acidity that cleans the mouth and refreshes the heart during an hard-working day, for example.

Then, our “The Wine for Seafood” that is a Melon de Bourgogne grown in the Muscadet region, in Western Loire Valley, France. It is a wine with high acidity and crispy character, with citrus and steely aromas combined with a delicate note of bread crust. This is a wine that can be also paired with light sandwiches and finger foods used as entrées, often served with mousses and different sauces. Moreover, thanks to its acidity and citrus-driven aftertaste, it is an ideal wine for fried food in general, from vegetables to pork meat. In fact, the wine will perfectly clean the mouth, making it ready for another bite.

As mentioned above, “The Wine for Pizza” can be easily paired with street food, just like Pizza is, and with foods characterized by a lot of fat and sauces used during the making, generally speaking. One of the best pairings for this Montepulciano d’Abruzzo is pulled pork, because the wine will perfectly match the smoothness of the meat while prolonging its aftertaste thanks to its spiciness. Finally, “The Wine for Steak” can be obviously paired with all kind of grilled meat or roasted meat. Think about a beautiful BBQ with cow ribs and steaks paired with this blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah while looking at the sunset. A wine that is going to let you relax with your friends and family. However, it can also be used with gourmet and complex pasta dishes, just like pasta with black truffles or pasta with different kinds of mushroom: the powerful aromas of the wine are able to match with the strength of mushrooms, while prolonging their aftertaste.
